Pushkaralu

Puskaralu or Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of indian rivers. It is also known as Pushkaralu (in Telugu), Pushkara or Pushkar. 

Pushkaralu is celebrated at shrines along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India, in the form of ancestor worship, spiritual discourses, devotional music and cultural programmes. Pushkaralu celebration happens annually, once in 12 years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign, and the river for each year's festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. Due to regional variations, some of the zodiac signs are associated with multiple rivers

The Kaveri or Cauvery is a large Indian river. The origin of Kaveri river is traditionally placed at Talakaveri, Kodagu in the Western Ghats in Karnataka State, flows generally south and east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and across the southern Deccan plateau through the southeastern lowlands, emptying into the Bay of Bengal through two principal mouths.

According to legend a girl called Vishnumaya or Lopamudra, the daughter of Brahma was born, but her divine father allowed her to be considered the foster daughter of sage Kavera-muni . In order to obtain the beatitude for her adoptive father, she resolved to become a river whose waters would have to purify all the sins. This river came to be known as "Kaveri", the daughter of Kavera.
